I was absolutely riveted reading this entire essay—stunning in ideas, stunning in execution, a mini-tarot thriller about your lovely lost boy! And with footnotes that layer on so, so much. Thank you for it.

Thank you!!! I was so distracted from writing this by all of this other stuff I have to say, hence the footnotes, lol. I'm glad it somewhat worked out!

Also, from the excerpt, that essay on Bourdain sounds like it would be perfect for my killed Bon App piece on why no one can be him again… despite trying! I’ll run it in my newsletter soon.

Oh man, I wish the Queen of Coins essay were still available! And now I'm extremely excited to read your piece ... I've been thinking about Bourdain so much recently with the anniversaries of his life and death. I can't wait to read your essay.

I still have a copy of Jessa Crispin's "Anthony Bourdain Is the Queen of Coins" TinyLetter essay saved in my e-mail archive! If anyone needs/wants a copy, just let me know and I can forward it along!

I loved this so much 😭 obviously I adore the black cat figure, a modern construct of bad luck that, to me, has brought nothing but the deepest kind of magic to my life. (Even when it’s supposedly bad magic, like the kind that brings you closer to dead things.) when I was first learning tarot, connecting with the element combinations resonated most. Watery fire makes me think of Emma Goldman, a righteously angry orator who couldn’t help but fill her memoir with lovesick gossip alongside radical political analysis.

Also, ty for the shoutout! Also lol to that Bridgerton comment, it all feels very Hamilton to me.

Ah, I didn't even think about how the black cat on the Queen of Wands both amplifies the black cat as a magical figure and subverts the "bad luck" dimension of that. How beautiful, I will be bringing that idea into my readings when this card shows up in the future, thank you!!

And I LOVE the connection of Emma Goldman to the Queen of Wands; it's totally perfect.

I am so relieved you found Fitz! I remember you saying once that the Queen of Wands may have been based on a friend of Pamela Coleman Smith’s who sat down for a portrait, and I always think about that when she shows up — a loyal friend who supports your artistic dreams, with a casual confidence that’s contagious.

Wow, I love this reading for the Queen of Wands appearance so much. And yes, Smith modeled her after her good friend and her cat, Snuffles!
