This was such a beautiful tribute to Jimmy, and also to the kinds of relationships that we need but don't expect. Things have been feeling so cold lately, but this letter (and your writing in general!) has been such a source of warmth, I can't begin to get across how appreciated it is. I really think some of the solution to the alienation and coldness is what you presented in this letter: just being with people, caring for them, not resenting them for being different than what you want. I'm going to be thinking about this for a long time, thank you Cameron. I'll light a candle for Jimmy.
Thank you so much, Michael. This comment means a lot to me, because it has taken me a long, long time to cultivate warmth as a quality of writing, and so it means quite a bit to hear that it’s working for you, here, in my tribute to a really wonderful person that I miss so much. Thank you <3
Cameron, I am so sorry for your losses. I will light a candle tonight in honor of Jimmy. Your words around him are so beautiful and your love for him punches through the loss. Sending you love.
I’m so sorry for your losses. A stunning tribute not just to Jimmy but to these unexpected relationships that shape us and how much more we all have in common than we like to pretend. Sending love ❤️
Cameron, I love this so much. Thank you for this ode to Jimmy; it felt so tender to read, and also left me feeling wiser about the politics of relationality. Also very grateful to have this in my own time of loss and increasing disability. Thank you, love you.
This was so beautiful - I’m so sorry for your losses, especially Jimmy! Companionship, in whatever form it comes, is so essential for all the chronic/long term/terminal illness crap. It’s a lonely place without people who don’t get it. I’m glad you got a lovely year with him. Isn’t it so funny how we are often more connected with people than we’d like to think. ❤️
Sorry for your losses, Cameron. I love your tribute to Jimmy, and of those steady, consistent relationships that seem like small talk at first blush and are actually so much more. Discourse is no match for that; thank you for that much-needed reminder ❤️.
This is riveting and beautiful—thank you
Thank you so much, Lesley!
