My closest friends live far from me. This necessitates weekly phone calls, usually lasting an hour or more, where my mind disappears into their lives while performing the most annoying tasks of my own on autopilot. I fold laundry listening to Abigail talk about motherhood and Houston; I scrub the kitchen floor while Emily tells stories of academia and Lincoln, filling my mind with the textures, sights, sounds of my old life in Nebraska. 

Distance makes our calls part of love’s requirement. It sucks; I miss the feel of Emily’s shoulders against mine in a booth at Jake’s, a favorite neighborhood bar. I crave the sound of Abigail’s laugh up close, layered over top of the Vanilla Sky soundtrack in her car. 

But the distance is also kind of wonderful in its own way. Because I cannot be near them, because I can only apprehend them and their lives through the sounds of their voices, my imagination is forced to fill in the gaps of sensation in the stories they tell me about their lives.
