One of my secrets as a tarot reader is that I love the “bad” cards. If the shuffle is where I approach god, a line I’ve stolen from T. Susan Chang, then it is both a relief and a practice in humility and acceptance to turn over cards that reflect back to me times of struggle and bad feeling. To be reminded that I am not alone in my petty heart and shitty moments, that, for centuries, humans have wrestled with material and moral inadequacies and have made it through them to something different, one way or another.
